Orrin C. Evans Jr. was a prominent African-American attorney and civil rights activist in Philadelphia. He was born in 1918 in Trenton, New Jersey, and grew up in the Nicetown neighborhood of Philadelphia. Evans attended Central High School and graduated from Lincoln University in 1938, where he was an outstanding athlete and active in student government.
After earning his law degree from the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 1951, Evans became the first African-American attorney to work for the Philadelphia City Solicitor's Office. He later joined the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund, working on prominent civil rights cases such as Brown v. Board of Education.
In addition to his legal work, Evans was involved in numerous civil rights organizations, including the National Lawyers Guild, the National Conference of Black Lawyers, and the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission. He also founded the Philadelphia Association of Black Lawyers in 1975 and the Africana Studies program at the University of Pennsylvania in 1970.
Evans died in 2007 at the age of 89, leaving behind a legacy of activism and dedication to justice and equality for all.
